At a prestigious ceremony at the Amex Stadium, Brighton on Wednesday 1st February, artisan pie maker The Real Pie Company picked up the Sussex Food Producer of the Year Award for 2017.
Christine Cossins and Brett Hornby from The Real Pie Company were presented with the award by Sally Gunnell OBE. The Sussex Food & Drink Awards recognise the achievements of local food producers. It is a great honour to receive one against high calibre opposition.
Christine Cossins, Managing Director at The Real Pie Company was justly proud of the firms achievements:
“We are absolutely delighted to receive the Sussex Food Producer of the Year Award 2017. Our ‘crammed to the crust’ philosophy means each hand crafted pie is packed with slow cooked British meat so the customers gets a ‘proper filled pie’ rather than a lot of hot air. Add a delicious gravy, a golden puff pastry crown and you have a winning combination.
Our business has been growing gradually through the quality and high standards that are now associated with local produce. Sussex now has a tremendous range and depth of local producers so it makes it even more special to win tonight.”
The awards are part of an intensive 8 month process, with over 13,000 public votes counted. Now in its eleventh year, the awards are all about supporting and boosting local farmers, food and drink producers and the outlets that use and sell this superb local fare. Starting from small beginnings, the awards have grown to become prestigious and respected, with huge support from business in the county, bringing together the whole local food and farming community.
The Real Pie Company was launched by a family of artisan butchers in Sussex 16 years ago. All Real Pies are hand-crafted, baked in small batches under the watchful eyes of Real Pie chefs and they have full farm to fork traceability. They contain only British ingredients and wherever possible, locally sourced. Real Pies are uncompromisingly wholesome and as the judges found out “crammed to the crust’ with flavour.
For The Real Pie Company, Winning The Sussex Food Producer of the Year 2017 follows hot on the heels of a series of Great Taste Awards as well as 8 awards at the Melton Mowbray British Pie Awards 2016.
